The first thing that comes to mind is the layout of the appliances. You are going to need to make sure that they form the working triangle.
Maybe you would like a larger refrigerator, or add a dishwasher, or possibly incorporate a microwave over the range. Are there certain cabinets that you want to include in the new kitchen design, such as a tall pantry cabinet, a lazy- susan cabinet, or maybe a refrigerator cabinet that extends out to meet the front of the refrigerator.
Are the wall cabinets that you have now tall enough or do you want cabinets that will reach to the ceiling of the room. Is there a possibility of opening up the kitchen to other rooms of your house. This will create the appearance of a larger kitchen if you are limited on space. Something else that should be discussed is the countertops.
It will not be very practical for you to install granite tops if you have small children who could accidentally scratch them. Granite will scratch easily and the abuse that it could take with small children will leave you frustrated.
Flooring is another aspect of the kitchen design that needs to be discussed. Just make sure that the new floor is installed before you install the kitchen cabinets, unles the type of floor that you have chosen is a floating floor. You will want to convey this information to your kitchen designer.
Custom cabinets are expensive, but they are also something that can make the kitchen all the more unique to your home. Maybe a custom island cabinet that will stand out and be a feature piece of the room.
Bumping up some of the wall cabinets or even bumping them out will give your kitchen a unique feel to it. Your door styles that you decide on as well as stain colors and finshes is something that you are going to want to consider as well.
