How to Install Kitchen Cabinets - The Basics

If you know how to install kitchen cabinets in your own kitchen, it is possible to save yourself a lot of money. But better yet, you will be able to stand back at the end of the day and look upon the creation that you made.

By understanding the basics of your kitchen installation process, you will feel confident that you will be able to get the job done without making any costly mistakes. To start off, I suggest that you become very familiar with your new kitchen layout as this will help you to visualize what the end product will look like.

What will help you greatly will be to actually draw the layout on the kitchen walls. By doing this, you will get a better understanding of exactly how to go about the installation of the cabinets. Hopefully, you have had a professional designer draw up your new kitchen and supplied you with a three dimensional drawing or layout for your use.

Closely examine how the cabinets are laid out on the kitchen walls. Double check that you have all of the cabinets for your new design. You will want to make sure that the wiring for appliances are in the proper locations, and that any electrical devices do not have to be moved. You might find that these wires or outlest will need to be moved. Moving this wiring is not a big deal and your electrician can take care of it for you.

Making sure that everything is loacted properly will help you in the long run before you get started with the installation. So, now that you have made sure that the wiring and plumbing is located properly, you will need to find the high point of the floor. Whenerver possible, have the new flooring installed before you plan on installing the new kitchen cabinets to ensure that all of the cabinets are placed securely on the new floor.

Do this beforehand so that the rest of the kitchen installation goes smoothly. During the cabinets install, protect the floor as much as possible. But, if you are planning on a floating floor or perimeter glued vinyl, these floors will have to be installed after the kitchen is finished. These types of flooring need to be able to free float, so to speak, and having the base cabinets sitting directly on them would not allow the floor to move as it is supposed to.So, once the floor is down, you will want to measure up from the floor at any given spot and place a mark that is thirty inches off of the floor on the wall.

Wherever the base cabinets are going to be installed, draw a level line around the walls from the measured point. Roughly every two feet or so, measure up from the floor to the level line and make a not as to what the smallest measurement was and where it was located. This will be the highest point of the kitchen floor. To make a line that represents the top of the base cabinets, measure up thirty four and a half inches from the high point of the floor.

This will represent the top of the base cabinets and will serve as your reference point for the wall cabinets as well. You are going to learn that there is a lot more to a kitchen installation than just screwing cabinets to a wall. I have put together a comprehensive resource that covers all of the details that you might encounter in your kitchen remodel.
